Telogenic Effluvium
There are cases of hair loss where there is an acceleration of follicles from anagen into telogen phase. This happens after some event, disease or exposure to chemicals.
The conditions related to this category of hair loss are base on the following conditions:
- Fever
- Stress
- Diets with low calories
- Inflammatory illnesses
- UV radiation exposure
- Post-pregnancy
There are also hair loss drugs which cause Telogenic Effluvium. These are the following common drugs:
- Birth control pills
- Heart disease and high blood pressure, especially beta-blockers like Propranolol and ace inhibitors like Captopril
- Blood thinners, like Coumadin and Heparin
- Some gout fighting drugs like Allopurinol
- Some antidepressants like Lithium carbonate
- Some amphetamines like Dexedrine
- Some Diet drugs, including Phentermine
- Retinoids, including high doses of Vitamin A and Isotretinoin
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone replacement therapy
The treatments for these hair loss conditions are:
- Treat the underlying disorder or condition.
- Discontinue the medications causing the hair loss.
- Use minoxidil 5% is very helpful.
- Steroid scalp lotions can be helpful.
- Vitamin B complex especially vitamin B6 + B12 given orally or injectables.
Hair transplant is not an appropriate treatment for this type of hair loss.
