Minoxidil was the first drug approved by the FDA for the treatment of hair loss.  Originally developed as a drug to treat high blood pressure, it was discovered that the topical application of the drug on balding areas could result in new growth.  Minoxidil has been shown to be particularly effective in the crown of the scalp, slowing hair loss and stimulating new hair growth.
